BIRD SIGHTINGS A Black-bellied Dipper was found on the 1st November 2008 and was seen all day and first thing the following day. Since then it is seen every now and again on the weirs. Common Redpoll, Water Rail, Peregrine, Goosander, Woodcock, Brambling, Waxwing and Stonechat have been seen during the month with the high light of a Rough-legged Buzzard on the 14th. December arrived and the Tawny Owls were back in the car park roost and a few Redpoll are in the Alder wood. January has been a good month for birds so far with the Black-bellied Dipper being seen again on the 15th. A survey of the whole nature reserve on the 10th recorded 73 species and we have seen Common Redpoll, Brambling and up to 20 Snipe this month. Spring has begun with a Grasshopper Warbler on the 19th April and our first Cuckoo on the 21st April. At the end of April a Hoopoe was seen flying along the valley towards Glandford. On the 17th of May a Honey Buzzard was watched being chased by a Carrion Crow and Common Buzzard. A pair of Spotted Flycatchers have taken up residence in the woodland and we are hoping they will breed. The autumn has proved that the valley here attracts a good variety of species with the following seen; Crossbill, Brambling, Yellow-browed Warbler, Firecrest and Peregrine. Winter 2010 and the cold weather has provided good views of Bullfinch, Chiffchaff, Tawny Owl and a 1st year Glaucous Gull as well as many Woodcock. Spring 2010 has been interesting with records of Avocet, Gannet, Grasshopper Warbler, Cuckoo, 16 Wheatear, Red Kite including 2 birds together. Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper have be seen along the river and a Bittern was seen over the marsh. May has seen some good bird records for us with the highlights being Ring Ouzel, Tree Pipit, Reed Warbler and Turtle Dove.
